Hello everyone and welcome to our first blog post.
We started the Winter with lots of momentum, booming healthy colonies and everything ship shape and Bristol fashion. Sadly the good mild weather has meant the bees have been flying and burning up their Winter stores.
Add to that the strong winds from last week and we had potential for disaster. As if that wasn’t enough Jon suffered 3 heart attacks 2 weeks ago and was unable to respond to the changing conditions in the apiaries. Thankfully he received the best care possible and is back on his feet and building up his fitness. He is away from his main occupation as an airline pilot now for 6 months and he is busy writing course-ware for our courses.
Yesterday a good friend, Keith, took Jon to the mating apiary to help with any damage caused by the storm. We are happy to announce that all of the colonies came through it; although one big colony had been blown over. A few were lighter than expected and that will be remedied at the weekend with a purchase of 100 kg of fondant. That should be plenty until the January treatments.
We have a number of very strong nucleus colonies being over-wintered and so if you might like to express an interest in buying one please get in touch.
We have locally produced bees or Buckfast F1 led nucs for sale in the Spring. Please get in touch if you would like to reserve one. We will be blogging all of our activities so please sign up to the newsletter and keep following our progress.
We are looking forward to exciting times this season at Jonnybeegood!
